Arthur Maass (1917-2004)

My great uncle Arthur passed away yesterday morning. He lived a long and accomplished life as a historian and educator. He was a professor at Harvard University and eventually became Chair of the Government Department and then retiring in 1984. He published a number of books and papers on government as well as conducting research and publishing several papers with the Army Corps of Engineers regarding irrigation issues around the US. He will be missed.

Route 99 Bridge

A bridge slowly comes down.

I find it strange that no other news outlets have any information on this. The abandoned raised section of Route 99 which passes over Sullivan Square is finally coming down. People have wondered about this bridge's fate for several years and here it is getting torn down and not a peep from anyone. Not to mention that the worker from Testa who I spoke with said that half of the Sullivan Square rotary will be closed off from last night (Friday evening) until early Monday morning. That's a long time for such a disruption to a major traffic route in and out of Boston.

Like a glove

Doesn't look like we're going to fit, does it?

Three feet to spare on either side. Three feet! Sixty thousand tons of steel and oil, and they squeeze it through the Chelsea Street Bridge with three feet of leeway.

Inbound ship

I was invited to ride a ship in with one of the Pilots the other morning. I climbed up the pilot ladder onto the Irving Canada, an arriving fuel-oil tanker. As I was told to expect, the harbor looks very different from eight stories above the water on the ship's bridge.
